Job details A leading global wealth management company is looking for a qualified lawyer to join its rapidly expanding Asia Pacific legal team. This is an excellent opportunity for a banking and finance lawyer to join a global business which continues to grow across the region.

Purpose of role

•To provide expert legal advice and counsel to the Wealth business, focusing on Asia
•To identify and manage legal risk, liaising directly with the businesses as appropriate. Wealth Asia is a growing part of Wealth and provides a fast moving environment in which complex high value products are offered sophisticated clients in a range of countries around Asia.
•To work with legal shared team members in addressing legal service requirements as and when required.
•Proactively to advise and educate the business on relevant legal issues.

Core accountabilities

1.Legal Advice and Risk Management (80%)

•Provide expert and timely advice, particularly in relation to law and regulation of financial services in Hong Kong, Singapore and the surrounding region.
•Draft and update client documentation
•Proactively advise on and help to manage important changes in law and regulation
•Liaise with other members of Legal and Group stakeholders on legal risk
•Help develop policies and procedures designed to reduce legal risk
•Manage external legal support and maintain cost discipline

2.Training and support (10%)

•Implement training for business and support areas on relevant legal risk issues
•Share know-how and experience with other legal advisers within the team and elsewhere within Legal
•Attend external seminars on new legal developments

3.Relationship Building (10%)

•Proactively forge relationships with a broad range of business areas and third parties
•Monitor “client satisfaction” and the legal effectiveness of individual transactions and cost management of the legal advice provided.

Supervisory responsibilities

•Manage external law firm relationships
•Manage work of external law firms to ensure high quality, relevant, cost-efficient advice to the business

Role requirements

Essential
•Qualified lawyer with:
-a strong technical knowledge of financial services law and general banking law
-experience of general wealth management/private banking
-experience of involvement with bank business development and senior management

Preferred
•Experience managing projects, transactions, disputes & external counsel
•Understanding the requirements of legal risk management in a financial institution
•Knowledge of the Group’s policies & procedures
•Familiarity with Wealth businesses and products, and legal issues affecting them
•Familiarity with OTC derivatives and structured products, funds/collective investment schemes, other investment products, banking, credit, trusts, cross border issues

Professional/technical experience
•High level of technical legal skills, specialist and generalist
•Incisive analytical ability to resolve and minimise legal risk issues
•Ability to manage change both procedural and document based from a legal perspective
•Ability to take major legal decisions and conduct negotiations on behalf of the business
•Business competence and commercial awareness
•Ability to contribute in legal terms to business objectives
•Use of technology
•Law firm relationship management
•Ability to understand the roles and responsibilities of the various support functions including which functions should be responsible for managing various aspects of complex transactions, projects and initiatives

Academic and professional qualifications
•Qualified solicitor or barrister or equivalent foreign qualified lawyer
•[5]+ years post qualification experience

Language skills
•Excellent written and spoken English ability
•Cantonese or Mandarin skills preferred but not essential
